The Opportunity You’ve Been Looking For: SFRA Volunteer Opportunities – Summer 2021

The SpringFarm Ratepayers Association (www.springfarmra.ca) is continuing to expand its level of service to the community (in Ward 5, between Steeles Ave. and Centre Street, and Bathurst to Yonge Street). We are looking for new, community-minded volunteers to assist our efforts for the following projects:

City Hall Monitor (2-3 people)

Local politics groupies, take note! SFRA needs people who can be our eyes and ears on what’s happening at Vaughan City Hall, and in particular, Council and its committees, panels, and task forces. The job would involve checking the Vaughan Council website on a daily basis to see what materials and agendas for various committees, panels and task forces have been posted (typically only a week prior to the meeting), to advise the SFRA President on those materials, and, where required, to view live meetings (mostly during working hours, with some in the evening) and make notes on Council or committee decisions. We estimate this would take on average 2-3 hours per week.

This would be ideal for someone with a background or interest in politics, urban planning, municipal finance, or public administration, or just an interest in civics and local government.

Environmental Organizer (1-2 people)

Environmental activists – here’s your chance to make significant improvements to environmental issues in our area, and to bring local neighbours together for a good cause! We need energetic community organizers to recruit local residents living near Gallanough Park and the York Hill District Park (behind Garnet Williams Community Centre) to assist the Toronto Regional Conservation Authority’s planning and implementation of its SNAP Master Plan for Thornhill’s signature improvement projects. The goal will be to form local resident groups to work closely with the TRCA on more detailed planning of these two signature projects.

This would be ideal for someone with a background in environmental studies, recreation, communications, or community organizing and participation.

PLEASE NOTE: Community Service hours are possible for secondary school students.

To apply for either of these positions, send your resume to springfarmra@gmail.com by June 15, 2021 latest. We look forward to hearing from you!
